A few days ago I was driving to work on a semi major highway when I saw a dog running down the middle of the street. It was a medium sized dog, white with black patches, and appeared to be in the Bull Terrier family (one of my favs!) This is a pretty busy highway so my first reaction was of course panic that the dog was going to get hit. I am a self-proclaimed dog lover, as so many of us are, and the thought of a missing dog, let alone one that is potentially going to get hit by a car, set my panic over the edge. I also know that some people out there would pay no mind to the dog, making a dangerous situation even worse.
I slowed down my car, refusing to go through the light until I could see the dog was safe. Then, to my surprise, other people started doing the same. Even in the freezing snow breezed day, people began to get out of their car and call the dog (which of course wasn't listening). As the dog crossed the intersection, the cars in the opposing lane opened their doors as to create a barricade. It was at that moment that I noticed two people with frantic looks on their faces run pass me. The owners, I gathered. On the other side of the intersection, the good Samaritans, all of them, had enclosed around the dog and someone grabbed the leash. When the owners arrived, relief and gratitude swept over their faces.
People then returned to their cars and carried on with their drive. It took me a moment because I was so filled with emotion. I was relieved the dog was ok, but I was also pleasantly surprised that everyone pulled together to help. Its not something we see everyday, well, at least I don't. As I wiped the tears out of my eyes, yes I tend to get sappy about these things, I was grateful the dog was safe, and even more grateful to have been reminded that sometimes people can be so awesome.
